Vivamente (2011)

for 7 trombones

VIVAMENTE is a grand musical fireworks spectacle, in which different themes move around, spin, and explode. It’s as if a snapshot is taken of a large bonfire, where everything snaps and crackles until nothing remains but a smoldering heap of ash and charred wood.

The sparks that shoot off from such a fire find their paths in the most unexpected ways—not straight upward, but always taking a detour, often aided by the wind, only to vanish into the air. The pattern that emerges (as shown on the title page) is so erratic and imaginative that a unique sense of depth appears between the lines.

Because each spark follows a different path and is slightly different in color, five of the seven trombones are played with different mutes, in order to highlight all the facets and tone colors the trombone has to offer in this piece.
