Fanfarelle (2022)

for reed quintet

The Ruysdael Quartet invited 25 composers to contribute to a project that offers a colorful spectrum of Dutch composition at the dawn of the 21st century. The quartet gave composers full freedom in style and theme. What can one do with such a carte blanche? How does one express their essence within just a few minutes? It’s striking that many composers drew inspiration from the painter Ruysdael, but themes such as space and stars also frequently emerge. The collection of pieces spans a variety of styles, including lyricism, minimal music, 17th-century influences, microtonality, jazz, and world music. It’s a vibrant selection where nearly every genre is explored.
