COMPOSITIONS / CHAMBER / CONCERTO NO. 4 “RIMPELINGEN” (2017. ARR. 2020)
Concerto No. 4 “Rimpelingen” (2017. ARR. 2020)
FOR cello and PIANO
- 21 min

- July, 2020
RIMPELINGEN was inspired by pebbles crunching on the water: “Then I zoom in on the ripples on the surface of the water and on what’s happening underneath, that’s the ensemble. That’s where a complete world emerges, which eventually fades out.”
This arrangement was made for cello and piano by Rick van Veldhuizen in 2020. This created the opportunity for it to be played, even during the height of the pandemic.

“Rimpelingen by Jan-Peter de Graaff, with a main part for cellist Hans Woudenberg, was the most orthodox piece of the evening, with some lyricism, iridescent timbres and with a great feel for harmony.”
DE VOLKSKRANT
Frits van der Waa
“Also Jan-Peter de Graaff could be reckoned as a creative mind, as he gave the cello a main part in ‘Rimpelingen’, and was one of the few composers who was able to let a beautiful long note be a beautiful long note.”
TROUW
Frederike Berntsen

CD now available!
The Forest in April (2021) & Rimpelingen (2017)
You can now get your own copy of The Forest in April on CD, where it’s performed by Maya Fridman and the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nicolò Foron.
For cellist Hans Woudenberg, De Graaff wrote Rimpelingen (“ripples”) in 2017 on the occasion of his farewell to Asko|Schönberg, a work that was received with joy by the trade press. In season 2020-2021 cellist Maya Fridman was artist in residence at the Utrecht-based TivoliVredenburg. De Graaff was commissioned to compose a new work for Fridman, which was later titled Concerto no. 5 “The Forest in April”.
