Lock, Stock and Barrel (2024)

fOR PIANO

LOCK, STOCK AND BARREL is a two-episode suite for solo piano:

  1. The first episode “…between the devil and the deep blue sea…” (a dilemma with two outcomes that are equally worse), is a highly virtuoso movement where the musical dilemma lies between regular and irregular rhythmic patterns on a perpetuum mobile of endless quavers. Instruction for the performer is to play this ‘as funky as possible’.
  2. The second episode “…sour grapes…” depicts a deep ironical sense of dissatisfaction and disappointment in the shape of a french overture by using polytonality, clashing dissonance and a high sense of drama. Instruction for the performer is to ‘unleash their inner drama queen’.

First performance

Piano Paul Salard, Viviana-Zarah Baudis and Brecht Valckenaers
